1. Public Transport Try Before You Ride Event in Melbourne

Let us transport you to the annual Try Before You Ride event where you will learn how to use Melbourne's public transport.

What is Try Before You Ride

This Try Before You Ride is a hands-on event where participants with accessibility restrictions gain confidence using Melbourne’s trains, trams and buses. Participants can learn about payment methods, practise boarding vehicles and using accessibility features in a safe, supportive environment with guidance from transport staff. 


Location and time

The event will take place at Southern Cross Station on Thursday 16 October 2025. 


Shuttle bus service

Local Transit is operating return  shuttle buses from inner city suburbs to Southern Cross Station. All vehicles are wheelchair-accessible, with trained drivers providing assistance at pick-up and drop-off points.

There will be two time slots for pick-ups on the morning of 16 October: 

             1. 9:00 to 10:00 am

             2. 10:00 - 11:00 am

Local Transit is collaborating with MTM and the City of Melbourne Council to offer this transport.


Who can book the shuttle

Participants

To be eligible, participants must:

1. Not currently feel confident using, or do not know how to use, public transport in Melbourne.

And

2. Live within approximately 5 km of the Melbourne CBD - Carlton, North Melbourne, East Melbourne, West Melbourne, Fitzroy, Collingwood, Richmond, North Richmond, South Yarra, Southbank, Flemington, Collingwood, Abbottsford, Parkville, Docklands and Kensington.

And

3. Be a person with a disability or other restriction.

Support Persons

Please note: One support person is welcome to book a ticket per booking. A ticket must be purchased.


Ticket price:

$5.00 per ticket to be paid on the day.


How to book 

1. Select the number of tickets at the top right of the screen under the images (number of people in the group you are booking for).

2. Click Checkout.

3. Complete your contact information.

4. Complete the brief questionnaire. 

5. On the payment page, click PAY ON ARRIVAL.  

6. Accept the cancellation conditions.

7. Click the blue button RESERVE AND PAY ON ARRIVAL.

8. The person making the booking will receive a confirmation email.

9. Local Transit will call the person making the booking to confirm details, including pickup location. 


Please note

This shuttle service is only available to people who meet the eligibility criteria listed above (and one support person per booking), live within 5 km of Melbourne’s CBD (unless arranged prior with Local Transit), and have a purchased a ticket in advance.

Seats are limited and must be booked in advance.

Please PAY the driver on the Day of the event.

This tour includes return subsidised transport from the participants' suburb to the Try Before You Ride event at Southern Cross Station on 16 October 2025. Entry into the event and return transport are also included.
